Measurements to cook a hearty meal for 10 people
It is often very confusing for a novice cook to figure out exact measurements on how much to cook when company is coming. Shopping is the first step to hosting. So this confusion stems right at shopping. Chefs from Temple bay have suggested through MTS a basic guideline when attempting to cook a hearty Indian meal for a group of ten adults.
MTS NOTE: This is just a guideline for the following menu. Portion servings per guest will vary by the individual and the accompaniments to the meal (amount of appetizers, alcohol etc).
Menu:
Rice (plain cooked rice)
A chicken, meat, seafood or potato curry
Dal (lentil)
Mixed vegetable curry
And some kind of bread (nan or roti)
For the above said menu it will require for a group of 10 adults
5 cups = 1 kg = 2.2 Lb basmati or long grain rice
2.5 cups = 0.5 kg = 1.1 Lb dal (lentils)
5 cups = 1 kg = 2.2 Lb of mixed vegetables (for the mixed vegetable curry)
2.2 Lb = 1kg chicken/meat/seafood/potato (assuming 2 pieces of chicken or sea food per person given the other accompaniments)
Bread (nan or roti) 2 pieces per person
Onion, tomato, garlic, ginger and spices will varry based on the type of curry made
MTS Note
The above mentioned measurements are a guideline for the menu mentioned above. You could always add/ change/omit any item mentioned above to create a hearty Indian meal.
